Support & troubleshooting for your fibre internet

Use this guide to identify your Optical Network Terminal (ONT), check the right lights, and make sure your router is connected to the correct port before contacting AFTEL support.

Quick checks before you call

These simple checks solve many connection issues and also help AFTEL lodge the right fault with Redtrain if the fibre signal itself is down.

1

Restart your router

Turn the router power off, wait 30 seconds, then turn it back on. Wait a few minutes for the router to reconnect.

2

Check the ONT

Find the ONT, usually inside a garage wall enclosure or communications cabinet. Check that power is on and the fibre signal light is green.

3

Check router WAN cabling

The router port labelled WAN, Internet or sometimes a different colour must connect to the active ONT Port/LAN 1 path.

!
If the ONT shows loss of optical signal, contact AFTEL.
On Huawei ONTs a flashing red LOS light means the optical signal is lost. AFTEL can lodge a fault with Redtrain on your behalf and Redtrain will contact you for a technical appointment. Avoid pulling, bending or unplugging the thin fibre lead.

Huawei ONT: lights and cabling

For Huawei ONTs, the important indicators are Power, PON and LAN1. In most Redtrain homes only LAN1 is enabled for the first internet service.

Expected lights

Power green: the ONT has power. If off, check the power adaptor and wall socket.
PON green: the ONT is receiving signal from the Redtrain headend.
LAN1 green or flashing: the ONT sees your router or the correct wall cabling path.
LOS flashing red: loss of optical signal. Contact AFTEL so a Redtrain fault can be lodged.

Correct patching path

ONT LAN1 / Port 1Active Redtrain internet port
Patch panel or wall socketOnly if your house cabling is used
Router WAN / InternetNot a router LAN port

If LAN1 will not light up, test by connecting the router directly to Huawei LAN1 with a known-good network cable. This bypasses the patch panel and wall socket.

Example cabinet patching: ONT Port/LAN 1 feeds the internal house cabling, then the router WAN connects to the matching wall outlet.

Enablence Trident Aurora: check only the basics

The Enablence model is harder for average customers to inspect because the Ethernet ports are behind the ONT. Focus on confirming power, fibre signal and Port 1 link before calling support.

Expected indicators

Power green: the ONT is powered.
Network green: this is the fibre signal/PON indicator, showing the ONT can see the central office headend.
Port 1 link/activity green: Port 1 is connected to a device, normally your router WAN port or the correct house cabling path.
Video and Battery: these are optional indicators and are not normally needed for internet troubleshooting.
1
Use Port 1 unless Redtrain has told you otherwise.
Ports 2, 3 and 4 are not normally enabled for internet. Many connection issues happen when a router is moved to another ONT port because it looks available.

Corecess ONT: obsolete equipment

Corecess ONTs are now obsolete across the Redtrain network. If you still have one installed, please contact AFTEL customer service so we can request a replacement from Redtrain.

What AFTEL can do

  • Confirm whether the device is still a Corecess ONT.
  • Lodge a request or fault with Redtrain on your behalf.
  • Redtrain will contact you to organise a technical appointment if replacement or field work is required.

Common cabling mistakes

Most no-connection reports after moving equipment come down to one of these two mistakes.

ONT Port 2, 3 or 4 used by mistake

Even if the ONT has four Ethernet ports, Redtrain normally enables only Port/LAN 1 for your internet service. Other ports usually will not work unless Redtrain has specifically enabled or directed them.

Router LAN used instead of WAN

Your ONT or wall outlet must connect to the router's WAN or Internet port. Router LAN ports are for your computers, switches and other home devices.

Correct direct test

To rule out house cabling, connect ONT Port/LAN 1 directly to the router WAN port with a known-good Ethernet cable, then power cycle the router.

PPPoE settings after link is up

If the physical lights are correct but the router still will not connect, check the router internet type is PPPoE and enter the AFTEL username and password exactly as supplied. Credentials are case sensitive.

Frequently asked questions

Where is my ONT located?
Usually in the garage or a wall-mounted communications enclosure. Some cabinets require a screwdriver to open. Look for the fibre device that has power, fibre and Ethernet/network ports.
Can I use any LAN port on the ONT?
Usually no. Redtrain normally enables Port/LAN 1 for the first internet service. Use other ports only if Redtrain or AFTEL has specifically directed you.
What does a red LOS light mean?
On a Huawei ONT, a flashing red LOS light means loss of optical signal. This is not a Wi-Fi password or router setting problem. Contact AFTEL so a fault can be lodged with Redtrain.
What should I tell AFTEL when I call?
Tell us your address, ONT type, which lights are on or flashing, whether your router WAN port is connected to ONT Port/LAN 1, and whether you have tested a direct cable from ONT Port/LAN 1 to the router WAN port.

Still need help?

Call or email AFTEL with your ONT type and light status. If the Redtrain fibre signal appears down, AFTEL can lodge the fault and Redtrain will contact you for a technical appointment.
