Connect your router to the fibre box

Connect Fibre Box LAN 1 to your router’s WAN or Internet port.

The active path normally starts at LAN 1 or Port 1 on the fibre box and ends at the WAN, Internet or EWAN port on your router. The two ends may be connected directly or through your home’s wall cabling.

Make the correct connection

  1. Find LAN 1 or Port 1 on the fibre box. Other ports are not normally enabled unless AFTEL or Redtrain has told you otherwise.
  2. Find the router port labelled WAN, Internet or EWAN. It may be a different colour from the LAN ports.
  3. Connect the Ethernet cable firmly at both ends. A small click usually confirms that the plug is seated.
  4. Turn the router on and allow several minutes for it to start.
LAN is not WAN. Router LAN ports connect local devices such as computers and switches. The incoming AFTEL connection must use the router’s WAN/Internet function.

If your home uses wall cabling

A wall socket in another room does not automatically connect to the fibre box. A short patch cable inside the communications cabinet must join Fibre Box LAN 1 to the matching room socket.

  • Take a photograph of the cabinet before changing patch cables.
  • Check whether the room sockets or patch panel have matching numbers.
  • Connect the router WAN port—not a LAN port—to the room’s wall socket.
  • Look for LAN 1 and router WAN link lights after connecting.

If the room socket is not labelled, test one path at a time. Avoid moving the thin fibre lead while working in the cabinet.

Run a direct cable test

A direct test bypasses the patch panel and all in-wall cabling. It is the quickest way to identify whether the house cabling is interrupting the connection.

  1. Move the router close enough to the fibre box for a known-good Ethernet cable to reach.
  2. Connect Fibre Box LAN 1 directly to the router WAN or Internet port.
  3. Restart the router once and wait several minutes.
  4. Check whether Fibre Box LAN 1 and the router WAN light are now on or flashing.
If the direct connection works: the AFTEL service and router are likely functioning, and the problem is probably the patch panel, room socket or in-wall cabling.
If both link lights are on but there is still no internet: continue to the PPPoE setup guide.
