Use a VDSL modem-router with AFTEL

Use an old VDSL modem-router with AFTEL. Connect through its Ethernet WAN (EWAN) port.

Some VDSL modem-routers can work with AFTEL. The router must use an Ethernet WAN (EWAN) port. Do not use the DSL port.

Make sure the router is compatible

Look at the ports on the back of the router. You can also use the router manual. Find one of these ports:

  • A separate port has the label WAN, Internet or EWAN.
  • A combined port has the label LAN/WAN or LAN4/WAN.

The router settings must have these options:

  • An operating mode named Wireless Router, Ethernet WAN or EWAN.
  • The Ethernet WAN connection types include PPPoE.
The DSL port and Ethernet WAN port are different. Connect the fibre box to the Ethernet WAN port. Do not connect it to the DSL or Phone port.

If the router has no Ethernet WAN option, do not use it as the main AFTEL router. Some providers lock this option in the router firmware.

Select Ethernet WAN mode

Open the router settings. Look for Operation Mode, Internet, Broadband or Advanced.

  1. Connect your phone or computer to the router.
  2. Open the router admin page or app.
  3. Open the Operation Mode or Internet menu.
  4. Select Wireless Router, Ethernet WAN or EWAN.
  5. If the router asks you to select a WAN port, select WAN or LAN4/WAN.
  6. Save the settings.
  7. Wait for the router to restart.

After the restart, the router can use a different admin address. If the old address does not work, use the address in the router manual.

Before you select a different mode, take a photo of the router label and Wi-Fi details. If this router provides phone service, the mode change can stop that service. AFTEL does not currently offer a phone service.

Connect the router to AFTEL

01Connect Fibre Box (LAN 1)
02Router WAN / EWAN Port
03Enter AFTEL PPPoE Details
  1. Connect Fibre Box LAN 1 to the router WAN or EWAN port.
  2. Open the router Internet or WAN settings.
  3. Select PPPoE.
  4. Enter the AFTEL PPPoE username and password.
  5. Save the settings.
  6. Wait for 2 to 3 minutes.
Connected: The router shows Connected or Online. The router also shows a WAN IP address.
Cannot find an Ethernet WAN mode?

Find the exact model and hardware version on the router label. Use these details to find the correct manual. If the manual does not show an Ethernet WAN mode, do not use this router.

LAN4/WAN port does not work as a WAN port?

Select Ethernet WAN mode first. This mode changes the combined LAN4/WAN port to a WAN port. The PPPoE settings do not change the physical port.

Need a phone service?

AFTEL does not currently offer a phone service. Use a mobile service or an internet phone (VoIP) service. Ask the VoIP provider for setup instructions.
