Router compatibility and setup directory

Check router compatibility, operating modes, and setup steps for popular models.

To work with AFTEL, a router needs an Ethernet WAN port and PPPoE. A modem-router also needs an Ethernet WAN (EWAN) mode.

Choose your router type

Router-only device

Connect its WAN or Internet port to Fibre Box LAN 1, then set the Internet connection to PPPoE.

Mesh Wi-Fi system

The main unit must support Router mode and PPPoE. Connect it to Fibre Box LAN 1.

VDSL modem-router

Check for Ethernet WAN/EWAN mode. Switch from DSL/VDSL before entering the AFTEL details.

Router supplied by another internet provider

Some provider firmware hides PPPoE or locks Ethernet WAN mode. Check both settings before reusing it.

Common router families

Select your model for the AFTEL settings and manufacturer screenshots.

Other router types

AFTEL-supplied router

Use the included cabling and Wi-Fi details. The device is prepared for the ordered service before dispatch.

AFTEL supported
TP-Link Deco mesh

Use the Deco app, select Router mode and PPPoE, then connect the primary Deco to Fibre Box LAN 1.

Confirm exact model
TP-Link Archer VR/VX

These are commonly VDSL modem-routers. Select Wireless Router or EWAN mode and confirm which physical port becomes WAN.

Mode change likely
ASUS DSL series

DSL modem-routers require an Ethernet WAN-capable operating mode. Port assignment and menu names vary significantly.

Mode change likely
NetComm NF series

Many are VDSL modem-routers. Verify EWAN support, the assigned WAN port and PPPoE availability for the exact model.

Model-specific
Telstra, Optus, TPG or iiNet gateway

Provider firmware and telephone features may be locked. Use only if Ethernet WAN and editable PPPoE settings are available.

Limited support
Check the label under the router. Hardware versions can use different menus even when the model name is the same.

Compatibility checklist

Check these points in the manufacturer’s specifications or manual before buying or reusing a router:

  • At least one gigabit Ethernet WAN, Internet or configurable EWAN port.
  • PPPoE is available as an Ethernet WAN connection type.
  • The router supports the speed of your AFTEL plan on both WAN and LAN.
  • For a mesh system, the primary unit supports Router mode and PPPoE.
  • For a VDSL modem-router, Ethernet WAN mode is documented for the exact model.
  • You have access to the router administrator account and current firmware.

If you are unsure, send AFTEL a photograph of the router label and rear ports before purchasing accessories or resetting the device.
